How do foot health issues contribute to falls in residents?
Foot health issues are often overlooked as a significant cause of falls for residents and the elderly. A range of conditions can cause balance issues, but the feet can cause a wide range of preventable and avoidable balance problems. Bunions, corns, and nail problems can cause instability and pain, which, in turn, increases the likelihood of falls.
Reduced or impaired sensation in the feet can also lead to imbalance, increasing the risk of falls among residents. Falls can be highly detrimental to residents and massively reduce their quality of life, so podiatry is an essential service to protect your residents from preventable falls caused by foot issues.
Can you provide us with a falls prevention plan?
We can provide your care home with a straightforward exercise plan that can be undertaken in the home to promote strength and balance. If the care home would prefer that to be explained in person, that just needs to be requested directly with us.
What can we do to help reduce the risk of our residents falling?
We will arrange a visit every 6-8 weeks, unless advised otherwise. Ideally, all residents (unless seen elsewhere) are treated on each visit. If we can visit regularly, we will keep your residents’ feet as comfortable as possible. On top of that, it’s very beneficial to follow our footcare plans, highlight any issues to ourselves as soon as they occur, and arrange an urgent call-out.
How does this service provide evidence of proactive falls risk management for CQC purposes?
CQC will be able to see that patients are receiving routine podiatry care and that staff have recommended ongoing advice for each resident.
Who among the care home staff receives the falls prevention recommendations, and are they trained to implement them?
This will be provided to the care home, and it is then up to the care home to decide who can give them. If the residents themselves can undertake some basic strengthening exercises, they can be advised directly.
